So. This isn't exactly a suggestion of the staff in specific, but a suggestion at that. (Maybe just switch this to a suggestions board, in general?)
I asked about this on the server earlier and didn't get a large response.
I think some thought should be put into the IC terms for some of the current skills. Enchanting was the first to come to mind; I figured because the server is steampunk, it might not make a lot of sense to include fantasy magic-based elements along with it, unless desired. I have yet to see the appearance of an enchanter's table with Glimmar's Steampunk texture pack, but I don't think it's going to be quite the same as a magic book on a pedestal, so at least we don't have to worry about that.
Someone suggested calling it "enhancement", slightly kidding. It doesn't seem like a bad idea, as it's mostly just upgrading weapons and armor like someone might do with anything else.
Other skills to consider are brewing/alchemy. Whichever you call it, brewing makes me think of alcohol, and alchemy makes me think of Full Metal Alchemist, making things transform/appear out of nowhere. I suggest Herbalism, which by wikipedia's definition, is "the study and use of medicinal properties of plants and plant extracts." Herblore or Herbology are also potential names.
I feel like it'd be easier to refer to these ICly, without making it sound like some out-of-place part of the game, with different titles of these skills.
Thoughts?

I agree. I think all the terms you have suggested are good replacements. I also think the OP on the MC forums could have more lore, which includes terms like these.
